1. Determine Your Eligibility and Choose a Visa

The UK offers various visa options. The most common for South Africans are:

  • Skilled Worker Visa
    Requires a job offer from a UK employer, meeting specific salary and skill level requirements.

  • Ancestry Visa
    For individuals with a British born Grandparent.

  • UK Tourist Visa
    To visit the UK for up to 6 months out of any 12 month period

  • Spouse or Partner Visa – including child dependants
    For individuals marrying or partnering with a UK citizen or settled person and for those who want to bring their minor children with them to the UK.

2. Meet the Visa Requirements

Each visa has specific requirements depending on the application, some of which include the following:

    Recommended at Level B1 GESE

  • Financial requirements
    Proof of sufficient funds to support yourself.

  • Health requirements
    Tuberculosis test and potentially other health checks, if applying from South Africa.

  • Criminal record checks
    A clear criminal record is required in some cases.

  • Job offer from a registered UK Sponsor (Skilled worker visa)
    A confirmed job offer from a licensed sponsor.

3. Gather Necessary Documents

Prepare all required documents, such as:

  • Passport

  • Academic qualifications

  • Proof of funds

  • Job offer (if applicable)

  • English language test results

  • Medical certificates

  • Police clearance certificates

4. Apply for the Visa

5. Prepare for Your Move

  • Research living costs
    Understand the cost of living in the UK to budget accordingly. Consider your mortgage or rent, council tax, energy (gas and electricity), water, home insurance, other insurances, broadband, service charges, maintenance, groceries, parking charges, and so on.

  • Find accommodation

  • Healthcare
    Explore healthcare options in the UK. Start by visiting https://www.nhs.uk/ – the online home of the National Health Service.

  • Transportation
    Plan your transportation to the UK. Understanding flight costs and local transport networks well in advance will be extremely useful in your planning 

6. Settle In

Once you arrive, you’ll need to:

  • Register with the local authorities

  • Obtain a National Insurance number

  • Open a UK bank account

  • Familiarise yourself with UK customs and culture
