We often touch on the cost of living in the UK with our immigration clients. This isn’t our area, but we find that clients have mostly done their research and are looking for reassurance that they’re on the right track. In that spirit, we thought we’d provide a very quick insight into the cost of living in the UK. A highlights package for those who are going to follow up with their own more detailed research.

The big assumption…what is average?

To make this quick, we’ll borrow some assumptions about what is ‘normal’ and ‘average’ in terms of life in the UK, we’ll round up numbers from up to date research and show you the numbers.

For a start, there’s an old but much-referenced article that identifies Didcot, Oxfordshire as the ‘most normal town in England’.

Consider an average income

For a little context, it helps to deduct average costs from an average income. Drum roll…the average earnings in the UK at the time of writing was about £3000 per month.

It makes sense then that an average household income might be about £5000 to 6000 per month.

Monthly cost of living

Let’s get to it then. The monthly cost of living is:

  • £3,000 for an average family of four
  • £1000 for a single person

Calculations we looked at included costs for eating out, groceries, transportation, utilities (gas, electricity, internet, phone, etc) childcare, clothing and shoes, and rent or mortgage.

And a little left over…

We’re reliably informed that the annual household disposable income was around £35,000 in 2022. That appears to agree with our very rough estimates!

So, in the UK, we conclude that an average household may spend £3000 a month and save about the same amount.

Hope this helps your research!
