It’s important to understand the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme and how it will affect you as a European national.
It’s a bit of a change for those of you used to hassle free travel, but the process is meant to bring about general improvements to our overall travel experience.
What is the ETA scheme?
The ETA scheme is designed to enhance border security by requiring visitors who do not need a visa to obtain pre-travel authorisation. It aligns with similar systems in other countries, such as the United States’ ESTA and the EU’s upcoming ETIAS.
Rollout to European Nationals
From 2 April 2025, European nationals who do not already have UK immigration status will need an ETA to travel to the UK. Applications for European nationals opened this month (March 2025).

Why this is happening
This is a part of the UK government’s plan to digitise and improve the security of the UK border. Again, it aligns with similar systems implemented by other countries, and so, we would hope that this collective effort will bring about many small efficiencies in our international journeys.
It’s crucial for European nationals planning to travel to the UK to be aware of these changes and to apply for an ETA in advance.
We look forward to seeing you in Blighty!
