The EES, or Entry/Exit System, is an upcoming European Union initiative designed to automate border crossing registration for non-EU travellers. The key points are below:
What it is:
- An IT system that registers entries and exits of non-EU travellers at external Schengen Area borders.
- Applies to both those with short-stay visas and visa-exempt visitors.
What it does:
- Replaces manual passport stamping with electronic registration.
- Records traveller details including name, travel document type, biometric data (fingerprints, facial image) and entry/exit dates.
- Calculates the authorized stay duration for short-term visitors.
- Flags potential overstays to EU authorities.
Benefits:
- Streamlines border crossings for travellers.
- Enhances border security and detection of irregular migration.
Current Status:
- Launch is expected by the end of 2024 (as of May 2024). As early as October 2024 for Eurostar, Ferry ports and Eurotunnel Le Shuttle.
