If you plan to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in 2027, the date you submit will decide which English standard you must meet.
What has changed?
From 26 March 2027, the English requirement for settlement rises from B1 (intermediate) to B2 (upper intermediate) in speaking and listening. The Home Office estimates it takes around 200 hours of learning to move between the two levels. The Life in the UK Test is unaffected.
A simple self-check: Will you apply before or after 26 March 2027?
What counts is your application date. Applications made before 26 March 2027 are assessed at B1; those made on or after that date need B2, unless an exemption applies.
If you will apply before 26 March 2027:
B1 still applies, but only if you’re eligible to apply in time. Confirm your earliest valid application date and leave room to prepare properly.
If you will apply on or after 26 March 2027:
Plan for B2. A previous B1 test won’t be enough, so book your preparation and test early.
Evidence requirements
You can still meet the requirement through an approved English test, a recognised academic qualification or an exemption. Exemptions include majority-English-speaking nationals, UK graduates, those aged 65+ or with qualifying medical conditions, and children under 18.
The bigger picture: Earned Settlement
This change is the first step of the Government’s Earned Settlement reforms, which propose doubling the standard qualifying period for settlement to 10 years for most migrants. These reforms aren’t law yet, but the Home Secretary has said the new policy will be published later this year.
